WP3 — Ethical, legal, privacy and data protection specifications and continuous assessment (Lead: UL)
Goals & Objectives
- Ensure that the system aligns with ethical, legal, and data protection requirements.
- Continuously verify compliance with GDPR and other relevant frameworks during development and testing.
- Implement mechanisms to ensure transparency, accountability, and mitigate bias in AI and biometric systems.
Tasks
- Task 3.1: Ethical, legal and data protection requirements for system (UL(L); M1-3) This task focuses on ensuring the system adheres to ethical, legal, and data protection requirements throughout its requirement definition, development, testing, integration and deployment phases. It includes: (i) identifying the potential legal and ethical considerations involved in the use of technological aspects including Artificial Intelligence (AI) for enhanced automated border control, with special emphasis on privacy, data protection, transparency, accountability, bias, and discrimination concerns; (ii) mapping the specific legal and ethical requirements that must be fulfilled by the biometric-on-the-move systems used at border checkpoints; and (iii) specifying how the development and testing processes align with these principles, ensuring full compliance and upholding standards of fairness, transparency, and accountability.
- Task 3.2: Ethical, legal and data protection checking for system (UL (L), All partners; M1-36) This task involves ensuring that the processes, components and the whole system comply to all ethical, legal, and data protection requirements throughout all project development stages. It includes identifying potential privacy, data protection, transparency, accountability, bias, and discrimination issues associated with AI and automated border checking systems. Legal frameworks such as GDPR and other relevant regulations are analysed to map the specific requirements that must be met, particularly for biometric-on-the-move systems at border checkpoints. The process also involves implementing measures to ensure transparency and accountability, ensuring user consent and rights are respected. These checks will be provided by UL, while all partners will be informed to necessary corrective actions that need to be done in other WPs and tasks. EAB with external experts will be stablished to provide for the external supervision of the ethics and GDPR regulations.
