About the Project

Project Objectives

OnMoveID addresses the key challenges of modern Schengen border management through four interconnected pillars.

Digital Identity Innovation

Extending the EUDI wallet with biometric and document verification capabilities for secure, user-controlled identity management at borders.

Privacy-Preserving AI

Deploying AI-based document and biometric verification that ensures traveller privacy through edge processing and data minimisation.

Secure Border Integration

Seamless interoperability with EU large-scale IT systems including EES, VIS, ETIAS and the Schengen Information System.

Improved Traveller Throughput

Enabling walk-through, drive-through and bus modality border checks to reduce queues and improve passenger experience.

The Challenge

The increasing number of travellers entering and leaving the European Union is putting significant pressure on border management authorities. At the same time, security concerns such as illegal border crossings and overstays require stricter and more efficient control systems.

These challenges often result in:

Long waiting times at border crossing points

Reduced passenger throughput

Increased operational complexity for border authorities

Growing security risks

The situation affects airports, land borders and maritime crossings, where traditional border control procedures struggle to handle growing travel volumes efficiently.

The OnMoveID Solution

OnMoveID is a Horizon Europe research project that aims to modernise border crossing procedures through advanced digital technologies.

The project focuses on enabling no-stop or near no-stop border crossings while ensuring that security, privacy, and legal requirements are fully respected.

The system uses:

Digital identity wallets

Smartphone-based biometric verification

Multispectral camera technologies

AI-supported document verification

Secure integration with EU border control systems

By combining these technologies, OnMoveID aims to increase border throughput while maintaining high security standards.
